It is employed by a very wide variety of industrial sectors, from plastics to the pharmaceutical industry or e.g. for the inks and the adhesives and coatings industry. It is an excellent solvent when a fast evaporation is needed, with a sweet smelling and a moderate harmfulness. Alone or in mixture with other solvents, it is used as an effective degreasing agent or as a thinner for nitrocellulose, alkyd, acrylic, polyurethane paints. It is also used as thinner and cleaning solvent in the flexographic printing industry, where it is particularly suitable as a modifier of viscosity and in modulating the speed of drying of inks.
